Cake Photography Tricks For Dummies
By HomeBakers Team
I want to share something today. Once upon a time, I used to suck real bad at clicking pictures. Forget tempting food or a picturesque view, I could turn anything into a potato with my magical clicks. Soon, I wanted to remedy that and there started my search for hacks that could turn anything hideous into gold. Major thanks to the internet, a few helpful individuals and trial and error, we have collected a few key tips on how to make your food photos look amazing!
Dessert has always been one of my favourite muse and I will walk you through the tips and tricks of awesome cake photography.
Natural light does the tric
The biggest tip I can give you is the use of natural as much as possible. You can begin
way natural light enters your home and use that to select the best spot to take pictures of your cake. It may be always in the kitchen, remember that! You may end up clicking pictures in your lounge area or in a side entrance hallway. Hallway usually is my personal favourite pick as in most cases there is only one source of light there and that is the glass side door. One must look for an area in their home that is
bright, but not in direct sunlight. You may take the help of a thin white curtain to help your window diffuse the light.
Find Appropriate Props & Beautiful Backgrounds
There is something called making sense in a picture. Do not over-do or under-do it
always fill up your frame with props that make sense. For example, if you have got an
recipe, you can choose a few colourful spoons or sprinkles, or powdered sugar or
scoop in the shot. Also, always make sure that the props are appropriate and go with
instance, if the dish is bright and clean, use new utensils and keep the background
shot is more rustic and one of its kind, use vintage props (from may be a thrift shop).
Use ingredients in the shot
One great idea is using a few fresh ingredients that have been used while creating the cake. As for the backgrounds, many food bloggers love the look of white marble under their food, which really helps everything pop. If you do not have a marble counter top, you can purchase a marble tile from home depot.
Try telling a story with layers
A picture of a cake does not necessarily always have to be just a cake. You can choose to create layers in your shot to tell a story to your audience. Have props I both the background and foreground. You may sprinkle some powdered sugar with a lace to create patterns, or have fruits peeled and things are messy to picture as if you are in the middle of baking/decorating a cake. Broken egg shells can work too. A home cooked meal is way more appealing to a lot of people.
Never make it look too perfect
I know what they say about perfection. Bu when it comes to food photography, perfection is too overrated. One must embrace the imperfections and always remember that cakes happen organically and only that makes it even more beautiful. The wrinkles on fondant or whipped cream not set as it is expected to be are totally fine. Make sure none of the props are too parallel to each other or the shot may start to look a bit overdone.
Try them and do let us know which one worked the best for you. Also, you can leave us your suggestions if you have any more amazing photography tricks that we may love.
Cheers!
